If you frequently receive email that needs to be followed-up with a meeting, here’s a Microsoft Entourage calendaring shortcut you’ll love – Create Event from Message.

The built-in Entourage script, Create Event from Message, creates a new calendar event (meeting invitation) using the subject and body of the currently open mail message (or the mail message that is currently focused on). So, whether you have a particular piece of mail open in its own window or have one highlighted, press Control+E (otherwise written as ^E) to activate the Create Event from Message script.

Let’s run through an example.

Say I received an email message like this:

To create a meeting invite from this email, I either press Control+E or make the menu selection of Create Event from Message under the AppleScript
menu:

Create Calendar Event from Email in Entourage

AppleScript to Create Calendar Event from Email in Entourage

and violá! A new calendar event pops-up with the a copy of the subject and body text from your mail message like so:

This shortcut has save me a good deal of time by relieving what is usually a manual copy-and-paste process to create new calendar event on the same topic of an email I’ve received.

I love this tip, but I couldn't find the script in my AppleScript folder. Is this something I need to write and then save there? Or is it something that Entourage has built in?

    Thanks.

    Matt,

Inasmuch as I'm aware, the Create Event from Message is an out-of-the-box feature of Microsoft Entourage 2008. This script should appear under your AppleScripts/Automator Workflow menu when you're inside of Entourage. This menu corresponds to scripts found under ~/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Entourage Script Menu Items/ folder. Here's a copy of the Create Event from Message script in case your not finding this script on your system.

This script is one of my favorites.

I was confused for a second too, you might have the same issue I did. The applescript menu on the upper-right side of the screen is for scripts that are in /Library/Scripts. But when you are in Entourage, there's another applescript menu that should appear on the upper left side of the screen, next to the "Help" menu. That one contains the scripts for Entourage that are in ~/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Entourage Script Menu Items/.

I can open it as described, but how do I then save it? When I shut down the window the evnet is not in the calendar.

  6. lcalcote Says:

Colin, the new event should be listed on your calendar starting at the current time, lasting for 30 minutes (the default event duration). If you've made any changes to the event, you should see the red "X" button in the upper-lefthand corner showing a small black circle instead of an "X", which indicates you can perform a Save operation on the event. Hi, thanks for the article. It helped me in saving time. But the script does not take the time mentioned in the email for meeting to create the event. Instead it creates an event with the time when the event is created. Is there a workaround to this problem?
